By the time you get to chapter 38 of the book of Job you will find a beaten, broken, tired, and tried man. His friends have ridiculed him and his wife has told him to curse God and die. He lost everything he had. His body was ravaged with sores and his mind is whammed with confusion. Job seems to be a man without hope. If you notice when God speaks to him, He does not speak with nice, soft words. The Bible says that God’s Word shows up as a ‘whirlwind,’ posing questions instead of giving answers. God’s first question to this beaten servant was, ‘Who is this who darkens counsel by words without knowledge?’ The next thing God says to this tried by fire man is, ‘Now prepare yourself like a man.’
Really, Job’s only failure was to ask, ‘where are you, God? If I could just find You, I could get some answers.’ But notice, God gave no answers but only 120+ questions, all starting with ‘Where were you?’ (since, Job, you’re so smart?) There is not one of us that has faced all the things Job went through. And all he got were the 120+ questions that he had no answer to. I know for me, I find myself in my own self-pity posing too many questions to God. I could not answer if God turned those questions around on me that He gave Job. My questions would have to start with why did you save me, forgive me, or even call me to preach your gospel? Why, oh, Lord?
Rest assured that if God turned those questions to you after you pose your questions to Him on a daily basis you would have no answers, also. Job just wanted to hear from God. And I find myself in that place so many times, too.
The Lord spoke to my heart the other day and said, ‘I have told you what to do, now do it. I will not give you any further commandments.’ I can say I felt like Job. The truth of the matter is that's what I needed. Job, too, just needed to hear God's voice. We say silence is golden, but not when it's God that is silent.
In those silent times, God wants us to continue to trust Him in the things He said in His Word and has given us to do.
