Many over the years have asked me why I preach with my shoes off. You will find the answer in Exodus 3:9, 'Then He said, Do not draw near this place, take off your sandals, for where you stand is Holy ground.'
It's not that I consider myself anymore called, or anointed, or surely more holy than anyone else. It's just as a young Christian when the Lord started working on my heart to surrender my life over to Him, this is one of the first verses that really struck me and has stayed with me even until today. How could such a sinner as I even be called to stand behind a pulpit, much less preach or even declare the goodness of God's grace.
I do not expect anyone else to do what I do or believe what I believe. Nor do I think of myself more holy than thou. To me even to just try to stand and declare God's Word is the hardest, most challenging, humbling, and yes frightening thing I have ever done. Just to know that in the hearing of those that receive, what is said is life or death. It's not a pride thing, or a status symbol, it's just something about those words. 'Take off your sandals for the ground you stand on is Holy Ground.'
They just struck me to my core. If God told Moses that then, what has changed? If you have heard me preach you would know that it's not that I am all that good at it nor am I very polished or even a good speaker. But it's not how good I am that matters to me. It's that I always remember who I still would be without Him.
Taking off my shoes to handle and declare His word is the least I can do for Him, because of all that He has done for me.
Exodus 3:1-22
